Winona Stud is a leading breeder of Australian Kelpie dogs and Fine and Medium wool Merino sheep. It is located near Gulgong, in the Central Tablelands of New South Wales, Australia.
Ever since farmers started keeping and breeding animals, they have sought for a means of controlling their flocks and herds. Over the centuries, dogs have been progressively bred to perform more and more specialised tasks – guard dogs, seeing eye dogs etc – and the sheep and cattle dogs have been bred to have the physical attributes required for the arduous work they do. There are a number of well-known breeds of dogs that are extensively used by farmers to control their animals. The Australian Kelpie’s development began in the 1800’s, and it is the dog most commonly used for stock work in Australia and in many other parts of the world.
